Yeah I've done similar, hit my kids on the head before, but not the wife as yet, and yeah that wouldn't go down well if I did! Yeah that's a good approach - that's exactly what I did with the Top-Spinning version. Initially I couldn't get it to work at all - partly put off by both Ashley Mallett and Terry Jenner both disputing whether it was possible - Macca has written to Mallett about this as I recall and even now he disputes it (Mallett). I suffered stressed tendons early with it and then eased off with it giving it a break and resumed a few months later flicking a tennis ball around mastering the action and then once I'd done all the stretching and muscle building with the tennis ball I moved on to the kids size cricket ball and eventually a full size ball. The process included having to work slowly to the full length, I recall it took a few months. Having stopped bowling it, I'd have to re-do all the strength building and stretching again. With regards the history and Grimmett, the story goes that of all the variations that he tried, it was the Top-Spinning one that he only ever used in 1st class cricket and it was Bradman that called it and Grimmett refused to confirm that he was bowling anything other than a Leggie until years later - possibly in conversation with Mallett. Even then, Mallett, didn't believe Grimmett because of his own belief that such a ball was physically impossible to bowl. I think that's the story - you'd have to check it out in Malletts book on Grimmett and read Bradmans books for his take on it.

I'm glad this thread has reactivated: Sean has been asking me how he can bowl a flipper. I've been reading up and watching videos (including yours Dave) and I think he's going to struggle with having a hand that is not fully grown yet. Additionally, I'm somewhat reluctant to have him working too hard on it while he still hasn't nailed down his stock ball, but I can't see much harm in him at least practicing the flipping action in the safety of the living room. How do you get this to work when the bowler's hand isn't quite big enough to deal with a full size ball? Should he learn the flipping action with a junior ball or a tennis ball and move onto a normal ball later? Cheers, Graeme smaller softer rubber ball to start with. just using the thumb and 2nd finger like playing a marble then getting the snap by clicking the fingers as benaud said " as if you were snapping your fingers to get a waiters attention"
