I'm going to start this off with an observation I've made relating to how the ball is made to spin. If you ask a Leggie to show you how they get the ball to spin the explanation is generally very vague. They generally emphasise the method with which the ball is released not aware of how important the rest of the action (Whole body) is in relation to the outcome. My own action with which I've been working with for the last six years has been the Shane Warne/Terry Jenner version of 2 up 2 down relatively loose grip, with the majority of the work put on the ball done with the 3rd finger. But one of the kids that I do a little coaching with who plays in my sons U13's team - the Wrist Spinner Frank Farrington www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypzCYWvf2r8Uses a method that looks more like a finger spinner grip with the index finger and middle finger seemingly gripping the ball relatively hard and the spin being imparted by the middle finger. Like all wrist spinners he goes through phases where sometime it comes out well and other times it doesn't go so well, but overall I would say that he's a more accurate bowler than me and he gets a lot more spin on the ball. So, I've been having a look at this technique and trying it out and it looks like there may be something to it. Incidentally, the technique is also very similar to the way I bowl my Top-Spinner, which like this method is very fingery. With this technique for me the most obvious advantage is massively improved accuracy - my top-spinner is very accurate and it does seem that with only a slight tweaking of your wrist position and therefore difficult to see from a batsmans point of view, I'm able to produce a decent Leg-Break or Wrong Un.

I too have a slightly unusual grip. Its the only part of my action that I've not tried to analyse as it feels completely natural as I use my wrist mainly to impart spin. Regarding accuracy, Philpott says that the most important skill is 100% concentration and focus, for me this has eclipsed all the components of the delivery that I'd previously poured over. Close focusing on the point where you want the ball to land and blocking out everything else has taken my level up another notch over the last few months. I saw a vid with Benaud telling a youth "If you could win £xxxx by hitting a certain spot - would you take your eye off it". Attachments:

I think the video that you're on about and that quote is from one of these vids. The focus aspect and concentration is vital as you say - you have to be in 'The zone' as such for it all to come together really well - being relaxed is another aspect that is essential.

Love how many people have seen my MCC masterclass video! ;D I actually ripped the entire thing off my VHS copy but I've never gotten around to uploading the other sections. The chap Benaud is coaching looks absolute pony IMO, I can bowl better than that muppet!
