This is a subject I've had some experience with now over the last 4-5 years, I have a pretty tight grip and consequently my finger takes a real battering and has developed a significant callus on the inside of the top joint.
By sheer trial and error I've had to find ways of maintaining it throughout the season, not always with success. In the past I've had some painful experiences, the most extreme of which happened when bowling a googly in a match which caused the seam to hook onto a shred of skin and ripped the whole callus off. I couldn't bowl for 3 weeks after that one.
So since then I've learnt the value of proper maintenance which for me involves regular moisturising to keep it supple, keeping it clean and cutting off any loose or dead skin. And most importantly of all, knowing when to stop, especially where net practice is concerned. Its all too easy to be keen and end up causing yourself more trouble than was necessary.
Along the way I've also come across a few other more unusual methods, the most well known of which is the recipe for a solution passed on to Richie Benaud, the calamine lotion and boracic acid powder mixture which supposedly toughens up your skin. I'm yet to try this one as I don't know the quantities you're supposed to use of each nor the proper application, I've been meaning to contact Richie himself via an email address I acquired and endeavour to find this out. If anyone else has tried this out I'd love to hear about it.
The other is something I have used regularly to clean any cuts I might have; manuka honey +20, which is what Grum used on his spinning cuts and I can testify is very effective. The healing process does seem to be quicker when I've used it.
So there you go, please share your experiences as I think this is a topic which is of critical importance to those spinners whom it affects, and all you loose gripped people might find it interesting too!
